Honda's Earth Dreams engine was introduced to improve fuel efficiency, power delivery and emissions. It is used across many popular Honda models in Singapore, including the Honda Vezel, Honda Shuttle, Honda Freed, Honda Jazz, Honda Odyssey and selected Honda Civic models.
While the Earth Dreams platform is generally reliable, it has several common issues that differ significantly from the older Honda VTEC engines. Problem 1 – Engine Oil Leaks Are Not Always From the Valve Cover Gasket
One of the biggest misconceptions is that every Honda engine oil leak comes from the valve cover gasket.
On the newer Earth Dreams engine, Honda redesigned the cylinder head and sealing system. The engine uses multiple sealing points, making diagnosis much more complicated than previous generations of Honda VTEC engines.
The common oil leak locations include:
- Valve Cover Gasket
- VTEC Solenoid Seal
- Three Camshaft (CAM) Seals
This means there are multiple potential sources of engine oil leakage instead of just one traditional valve cover gasket.
Why Many Workshops Misdiagnose the Oil Leak
Because the VTEC seal and camshaft seals are hidden beneath the intake manifold, they are not immediately visible during a basic inspection.
Many mechanics replace only the valve cover gasket because it is the easiest seal to access. Unfortunately, the oil leak often continues because the actual leak originates from the VTEC seal or one of the camshaft seals.
Proper diagnosis requires understanding the Earth Dreams engine layout and carefully tracing the oil leak before replacing any components.
Accessing the VTEC and Camshaft Seals
Unlike older Honda VTEC engines, replacing these seals is considerably more labour intensive.
The intake manifold must be removed before the VTEC solenoid and camshaft sealing area can be accessed properly.
Without experience on the Earth Dreams platform, these hidden oil leaks can easily be overlooked.
Problem 2 – Slow Acceleration and Throttle Response Lag
Another common complaint from Honda Earth Dreams owners is:
- "My car feels less powerful."
- "There is a delay when I press the accelerator."
- "The engine feels sluggish."
- "Throttle response has become slower over the years."
Many owners simply assume their vehicle is getting old.
In reality, this is often not caused by engine wear at all.
The Real Cause Is Usually a Dirty Throttle Body
Over time, carbon deposits and oil vapour accumulate inside the electronic throttle body.
As the deposits increase, airflow becomes restricted and the throttle plate can no longer move as smoothly as intended.
The result is:
- Poor throttle response
- Delayed acceleration
- Reduced engine responsiveness
- Less enjoyable driving experience
Spraying Cleaner Is Not Enough
Many quick-service workshops simply spray throttle cleaner into the intake.
While this may remove some surface dirt, it does not properly clean the throttle plate or surrounding carbon deposits.

This allows stubborn carbon deposits to be completely removed instead of partially cleaned.
Throttle Idle Learning Is Essential
Cleaning the throttle body is only half the job.
After cleaning, the electronic throttle body must undergo an Idle Learn (Throttle Relearn) procedure using professional diagnostic equipment.
Skipping this step can result in:
- Unstable idling
- Fluctuating RPM
- Poor idle quality
- Engine stalling in certain situations
The engine control unit (ECU) must relearn the new throttle position so that idle speed can be controlled correctly.
Experience Makes the Difference
Honda Earth Dreams engines are very different from previous Honda VTEC engines.
Their oil seal design, intake layout and electronic throttle system require technicians who understand the platform thoroughly.
Replacing the wrong gasket or skipping the throttle relearn procedure may not solve the customer's problem and can result in unnecessary repeat repairs.
